Nordspace Partners with German Researchers for 3D-Printed Rocket Engines

Canadian aerospace startup NordSpace is collaborating with prominent German engineering experts to develop a medium-lift rocket engine using advanced 3D printing techniques. The company announced on March 15, 2024, that it has secured funding of up to $335,000 from the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) to support a research and development initiative focused on enhancing its additive manufacturing capabilities.

This project will see NordSpace partner with the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology and the German company SWMS. The Fraunhofer Institute is recognized for its advanced laser-based additive manufacturing technology, while SWMS specializes in artificial intelligence-powered software for optimizing advanced manufacturing planning. Together, these partnerships aim to refine the production methods for NordSpace‘s Hadfield engines at its newly established Advanced Manufacturing for Aerospace Lab.

Expanding Capabilities in the Aerospace Sector

NordSpace is positioning itself in a competitive market, focusing on orbital launch vehicles that can accommodate both light and medium-lift payloads. The company’s Tundra and Tundra+ vehicles are designed to transport 500 kg and 1,100 kg to low-Earth orbit (LEO), respectively. By the early 2030s, NordSpace plans to develop the Titan rocket, which will have a capacity of 5,000 kg to LEO.

In a statement, Rahul Goel, founder and CEO of NordSpace, emphasized that this collaboration represents a significant advancement for the startup. He noted the importance of working with leading technology partners in Germany to achieve breakthroughs in additive manufacturing that will have a direct impact on Canada’s industrial base.

The initiative is part of a broader trend in Canada, where a renewed focus on developing sovereign space and defense capabilities has sparked a domestic space race. NordSpace aims to establish a comprehensive Canadian space ecosystem, including launch vehicles, spaceports, and satellites. The company has made several attempts to launch its first suborbital rocket from its Atlantic Spaceport Complex in Newfoundland.

Future Plans and Industry Developments

Recently, the Toronto-based Canada Rocket Company emerged from stealth mode, announcing seed funding from Canadian investors to support its mission of providing medium-lift space launch capabilities within Canada. This development is indicative of a growing interest in the Canadian aerospace sector.

NordSpace is set to share updates on its development project at the upcoming Canadian Space Launch Conference in Ottawa on May 5, 2024.
