Ontario Science Centre Moves to Harbourfront Until 2029

The Ontario Science Centre will relocate to an interim space at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, beginning next summer, while a new permanent facility is constructed at Ontario Place, expected to open by 2029. This decision was announced by the provincial Ministry of Tourism, which stated that the temporary location will enable the Science Centre to maintain its programming, provide jobs, and support tourism in the region.

Originally opened in 1969 on Don Mills Road, the Ontario Science Centre was closed in June 2024 following an engineering assessment that revealed a significant risk of roof collapse. This closure faced considerable public backlash. Since then, a smaller display area has been operating at Sherway Gardens mall, which will continue until January 4, 2026.

Stan Cho, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, emphasized the importance of the interim location. “By establishing the Ontario Science Centre’s interim location at the Harbourfront Centre, we’re helping Ontario families access world-class science programming even as we continue building a new, expanded and state-of-the-art Ontario Science Centre just steps away at Ontario Place,” he stated. He added that this initiative would enhance family engagement with science while contributing to the vibrancy of Toronto’s waterfront.

Expansion Plans at Harbourfront Centre

The Ontario Science Centre previously introduced its KidSpark learning space at the Harbourfront Centre in December 2024, establishing a foundation for this upcoming expansion. Cathy Loblaw, CEO of Harbourfront Centre, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Harbourfront Centre has long been a trusted destination for families, and we are pleased to welcome the Ontario Science Centre’s expansion on our campus.”

With the expansion scheduled for completion by summer 2026, the Ontario Science Centre will incorporate dedicated areas for exhibitions and workshops at the Harbourfront Centre. The new facility will cover approximately 86,000 square feet and will include classrooms, outdoor program areas, and shared spaces for community events, allowing for a rich environment where children and families can explore and engage with science together.

This strategic move positions the Ontario Science Centre to continue its mission of inspiring a love for science among visitors while remaining a vital part of Toronto’s cultural landscape during the transition to its new home.
