Over 80% of Electric Vehicle Owners Commit to Switching Again

A recent report has revealed that more than 80% of electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the UK express a strong commitment to remaining within the electric market when trading in their cars. According to data compiled by the firm Evans Halshaw, 83.9% of EV owners opted for another electric model during trade-ins, reflecting a growing trend of loyalty among electric vehicle users.

The analysis, which draws from thousands of part-exchanges conducted across the UK, indicates a significant shift in consumer preferences as the country moves toward a greener future. With plans in place to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles after 2030, the transition to electric vehicles is gaining momentum. This change is further supported by regulations mandating that manufacturers increase the number of electric-only models they offer.

The data covers vehicle trade-ins processed through the Evans Halshaw Sell Your Car platform between January 1, 2025, and June 30, 2025. By comparing drivers’ previous vehicles with their new purchases, analysts were able to identify trends in fuel type and brand loyalty.

Trends in Hybrid Vehicle Ownership

Another noteworthy finding from the report is that 23.5% of petrol plug-in hybrid drivers transitioned to fully electric vehicles when changing their cars. This suggests that plug-in hybrids are serving as a viable stepping stone for those considering a full switch to electric driving.

As for the factors driving the appeal of EVs, financial incentives play a crucial role. The UK government’s Electric Car Grant scheme allows motorists to save up to £3,750 when purchasing select new EV models, making the transition to electric more financially feasible. Additional savings are available through the government’s EV chargepoint grants, which enable drivers who rent or live in flats to recoup up to 75% of the costs associated with purchasing and installing a home chargepoint, capped at £350.

Enhancements in Charging Infrastructure

The rapid improvement in charging infrastructure has also contributed to the increased adoption of electric vehicles. The number of public chargepoints across the UK surged from 28,460 installations in 2021 to 85,163 setups by 2025, marking an increase of nearly 200%. This expansion makes it easier for EV drivers to charge their vehicles while traveling, further encouraging the shift towards electric mobility.

The research also sheds light on brand loyalty among UK drivers across all fuel types. The findings reveal that 43.5% of drivers tend to stick with the same vehicle manufacturer when trading in their cars. This indicates a strong connection between consumers and the brands they choose, as many EV owners continue to prioritize familiarity and trust in their vehicle selections.
