Quadriplegic Farmer Innovates with High-Tech Hydroponics

In a remarkable story of resilience, Li Xia, a 36-year-old quadriplegic man living in a prefabricated home in southwestern China, successfully manages a high-tech hydroponic farm using only one finger and one toe. Despite being bedridden due to a genetic degenerative condition known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which severely weakens muscles, Li oversees the growth of celery from his bed, aided by his 62-year-old mother, Wu Dimei.

Li operates four greenhouses located approximately 10 metres (33 feet) away, using a computer program he developed himself. A computer screen, adjustable for his convenience, hangs above him, allowing him to monitor crucial data such as temperature, humidity, and nutrient levels. “Through this microcomputer and the programme I developed, I can track various data points from the farm,” Li stated in an interview with AFP. He has adapted technology to suit his needs, controlling the cursor with a trackball and using a flex sensor attached to his toe for clicking.

Initially, Li faced overwhelming challenges after a medical crisis in 2020 left him quadriplegic and reliant on a ventilator. “I was devastated,” he recalled, explaining how he eventually sought out new opportunities that made sense for him. This journey led him to hydroponics, an innovative method of growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution instead of soil. This technique requires less manual labor and allows for precise control over growing conditions.

“I grew up in the countryside, so I’ve always been in contact with seeds, soil, and vegetables,” said Li. His passion for programming and digital technologies inspired him to integrate these interests with agriculture. He taught himself to code and design circuit boards, showcasing his determination to overcome physical limitations.

While Li manages the farm’s operations, he relies heavily on Wu for manual tasks. “She is my arms and legs, and I am her brain,” he explained. Wu plays a pivotal role, using video links to communicate with her son about the tasks that need to be completed. She operates tools, measures fertilizers, and sets up equipment while providing round-the-clock care for Li, which includes cooking and maintaining his ventilation tube.

Despite her demanding schedule, Wu remains optimistic about their situation. “I don’t have time to rest,” she said, acknowledging the challenges they face. Even with the assistance of Li’s sister, who helps with bathing, Wu manages to sleep only three to five hours each night. “But it’s worth it,” she added, emphasizing the happiness they find together as a family.

Financially, the family relies primarily on Li’s sister’s income and Wu’s pension. Li views the farm as a promising venture with potential for growth. “If I succeed, it would allow me to fulfil a dream, but also to earn money and improve our living conditions,” he said. Since launching the farm in 2022, he has begun selling celery to a local supermarket chain, although he admits that they are not yet profitable.

Li sees his high-tech farming operation as a “niche” market with great prospects. His aspirations extend beyond mere survival; he dreams of expanding the farm, producing more vegetables, and ultimately improving his family’s quality of life. “My motivation is to see our vegetables grow, be harvested, sold, and end up on people’s plates,” he shared.

Through determination and innovation, Li Xia exemplifies the capacity for human ingenuity in overcoming adversity. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of how technology can empower individuals to adapt and thrive, regardless of their circumstances. As he continues to develop his business, Li remains focused on his future, driven by a vision of success and a desire to contribute meaningfully to his community.
