Mission Memorial Hospital has recently introduced the ALTA Platform, a robotic patient transfer device designed to enhance patient safety and streamline healthcare operations. This innovative equipment, acquired through a collaboration involving the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, Mission Health Care Auxiliary, Fraser Health, and the local community, marks a significant advancement in patient care.

Innovative Technology in Healthcare

The ALTA Platform is now the second device of its kind in the province of British Columbia and the first in a small community hospital globally. This cutting-edge technology, developed by the Canadian company Able Innovations, employs artificial intelligence to facilitate the transfer of patients between various surfaces, such as stretchers and imaging tables. According to the manufacturer, lateral transfers are among the most labor-intensive tasks performed by healthcare staff and are a leading cause of injuries on the job.

Dr. Andrew Edelson, a retired physician and former site director at Mission Memorial, played a crucial role in bringing this technology to the hospital. His interest was piqued after reading about the device in a publication by Doctors of BC. “I’m very excited about it. Everyone I’ve talked to thinks it is great. Healthcare workers are thrilled. This is groundbreaking for Mission and for Fraser Health,” he stated in a recent press release.

The ALTA Platform is poised to improve patient comfort and safety significantly. Dr. Edelson elaborated on the device’s benefits, stating, “Imagine you have an elderly or injured patient laying on their back. You need to move them from a stretcher to an x-ray table and then into their bed. You need 2-4 attendants to move them across a 4-6 foot space. There is potential for staff back injury, not to mention jostling the patient and causing pain.” The introduction of this technology aims to reduce such risks.

Community Support and Funding

The funding for the ALTA Platform came from the Mission Health Care Auxiliary, which raised the necessary funds through initiatives like the volunteer-run Cottage Thrift Store and the hospital gift shop. President Alice Campbell emphasized the importance of community contributions, noting, “It is important for the public to know how the items they donate to The Cottage Thrift Store end up benefiting the community.”

Jayiesh Singh, CEO of Able Innovations, commented on the broader implications of this technology for rural healthcare facilities. He remarked, “As our rural communities are confronted with a diminishing labor pool in the face of increasing demand for healthcare, our rural facilities need to do more with less.”

Singh stressed that the challenges facing rural healthcare are significant and growing. He expressed hope that the ALTA Platform will contribute to sustainability in healthcare by empowering front-line staff while enhancing the overall patient experience.
