Study Identifies Instagram and Facebook as Most Data-Hungry Apps

A recent study conducted by the IT Asset Management Group (IT-AMG) has revealed that Instagram and Facebook rank as the most invasive applications regarding user data collection. The analysis examined the privacy policies of more than 5,000 apps from the Apple App Store, focusing on their data practices and user privacy implications.

The research evaluated the privacy policies of apps selected from the top 100 in each category, filtering out duplicates and apps lacking sufficient data. By creating a comprehensive index based on 46 indicators—including 35 data types, six reasons for data collection, and five user relationship categories—the study quantified the level of privacy intrusion for each app. Apps were assigned an index score out of 100, with criteria assessing whether data types are tracked and linked, tracked, linked, not linked, or not collected.

Top Invasive Apps Identified

The findings showed that both Instagram and Facebook scored a striking 61.47 out of 100, making them the most intrusive apps analyzed. Each app collects 32 out of 35 data types, with 25 types linked to user profiles and seven both linked and tracked. This data collection includes sensitive information such as physical addresses and user IDs.

In third place is Grab: Taxi Ride, Food Delivery, with a score of 55.57. This app collects 27 data types, with 15 linked and tracked, including sensitive financial information and precise location data. Following closely are three apps tied for fourth place—Threads, Meta Business Suite, and Messenger—each scoring 54.53. These apps collect 32 data types but do not track any user data.

The remaining top ten includes:
– Nordstrom Rack: Shop Deals—score 53.62, collects 22 data types
– Nordstrom—score 52.54, collects 22 data types
– Pinterest—score 50.06, collects 29 data types
– AE + Aerie—score 50.01, collects 21 data types

Understanding the Methodology

The study’s methodology involved gathering privacy policy data from each of the 164 top apps identified on the App Store website. After excluding apps with low review counts or missing privacy policy data, 5,021 apps remained for analysis. Each app was assessed based on the types of data collected, which could include up to 35 different categories.

The level of privacy intrusion was categorized into five levels, ranging from tracked and linked to not collected at all. An index score was then calculated for each app, allowing for a direct comparison of privacy practices across the board.

The results highlight the pervasive nature of data collection by popular applications, particularly among social media platforms. While many apps provide valuable services, the extent of data collection—especially by widely used applications like Instagram and Facebook—raises significant concerns about user privacy and data security.
