University of Calgary Innovates Shatter-Tolerant Canola Technology
Researchers at the University of Calgary have developed a new technology aimed at creating shatter-tolerant canola, significantly benefiting farmers by reducing seed loss during harvest. This innovation addresses the issue of pod shattering, which can result in an average loss of three percent of seeds and potentially escalate to a staggering fifty percent under adverse weather conditions. The findings were detailed in a research paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
According to Marcus Samuel, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the university, the research team identified that as canola pods dry and harden, they generate a cement-like organic substance known as lignin. “We found that this gene was important for sending the message to the pods to lay the cement, so that the pods become stronger,” Samuel explained. He emphasized the importance of achieving the right balance of lignin, ensuring that the pods remain strong without becoming overly tough.
This new technology presents farmers with additional options compared to existing solutions, which can be costly. Samuel noted that farmers often pay significantly for current shatter-tolerant technology widely used in canola production. The research not only enhances existing methodologies but also opens doors for small companies eager to enter the agricultural sector.
Co-author Logan Skori, who leads a plant biotechnology startup called AgGene, highlighted that the research provides “fundamental knowledge” necessary for developing new agricultural technologies. AgGene is currently testing various genetic lines in greenhouses, with plans to transition these tests to field evaluations within the next year. “We’re looking for outcomes that improve pod shatter,” Skori stated, underscoring that the same approach will be applied to enhancing other crop traits, such as stress tolerance.
As farmers face rising seed costs, the need for affordable technologies becomes increasingly critical. This is especially pertinent given the ongoing trade challenges with China. Since March 2025, Canadian farmers have been subjected to significant tariffs on canola exports to China, which imposed a 100 percent tariff on Canadian peas, canola oil, and canola meal. Furthermore, in August 2025, a 75.8 percent duty was added to Canadian canola seed shipments.
In response to these trade barriers, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and several federal cabinet ministers are currently engaged in discussions in China, aiming to reset the trade relationship between the two countries.
This innovative technology from the University of Calgary not only addresses immediate agricultural challenges but also positions farmers to better navigate the complexities of the current economic landscape.
