In 2024, researchers announced the identification of a new species of giant anaconda, named Eunectes akayama, during an expedition in the Amazon rainforest. Their mission involved searching the lush landscape for anacondas, and their efforts paid off when they encountered a female green anaconda measuring approximately 16 to 17 feet in length. Fry, with the assistance of a hesitant Smith, collected scale samples from the anaconda for further analysis. The genetic analysis conducted on the collected samples led to the formal recognition of the new species. The northern green anaconda is distinct from its southern counterpart, Eunectes murinus, with the two species believed to have diverged approximately 10 million years ago.
