Canadian Startup Kepler Communications Launches Ten Satellites
Canadian startup Kepler Communications Inc. successfully launched ten new low-Earth-orbit satellites via SpaceX on January 7, 2026. This launch marks a pivotal moment in Kepler’s efforts to establish a robust network designed to provide fast telecommunications services from space. The satellites, each weighing approximately 300 kilograms (around 660 pounds), were deployed from a Falcon 9 rocket that took off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
The deployment is a significant milestone for Kepler, which has raised $200 million since its inception a decade ago. Based in Toronto, the company is focused on developing an optical relay network aimed at enabling real-time communications from space. According to Mina Mitry, CEO of Kepler, these satellites will serve multiple purposes, including Earth observation, defence, and enhanced communications. They are designed to function as “orbital data centers,” capable of storing terabytes of information and executing AI workloads in orbit.
Kepler’s innovative approach involves the use of lasers for data transmission, which allows for significantly faster communication compared to older technologies. Mitry emphasized the advancement, stating that the satellites elevate space communications beyond the “dial-up speeds” of conventional systems. In a recent announcement, Kepler highlighted the successful deployment of their ten satellites, equipped with high-capacity SDA-compatible optical terminals and multi-GPU on-orbit compute modules.
Historically, operational satellites have been primarily utilized by governments and military organizations. However, a new wave of private companies, including Maxar Technologies and Planet Labs, is now entering the field, providing access to high-resolution Earth observation data and high-speed communications. Mitry noted, “Gone are the days of space being dominated or controlled by these trillionaire entities. We’re seeing this new proliferation of commercial activity that’s taking place.”
This launch occurs at a time when many governments are increasing their investments in defence and intelligence. In its latest budget, the Canadian government allocated $81.8 billion (approximately US$58.8 billion) over five years to enhance its defence capabilities. Additionally, the government is committed to expanding its space ambitions, dedicating nearly $183 million over three years to improve Canada’s ability to launch space missions from its own territory.
Kepler is capitalizing on this trend. In December 2025, the Canadian Space Agency contracted the firm to conduct a “concept study” for next-generation Earth observation satellite systems. Furthermore, in October 2024, the European Space Agency selected Kepler to assist in the development of its optical laser network.
Looking ahead, Kepler is actively seeking new capital to scale its operations further. Mitry stated that the company’s immediate priority is to deliver the real-time data that customers require. To expand its capabilities, Kepler plans to launch an additional ten satellites in 2028.
