Google Unveils ‘Preferred Sources’ Feature for News Customization
Google has introduced a new feature called “Preferred Sources,” allowing users to select their favorite news publishers that appear in the “Top Stories” section of its Search platform. This feature, which was previously tested in a limited capacity, is now available globally for all English-language users. Support for additional languages is expected to roll out in early 2024.
This update aims to address user feedback regarding the visibility of trusted news sources during significant events. By enabling users to manually “star” preferred publications, Google ensures that these outlets are highlighted more prominently during breaking news situations. According to Google, data from the pilot program indicated that users are twice as likely to click on stories from sources they have personally selected.
How to Utilize the New Feature
The “Preferred Sources” feature is integrated into the Google Search results page. To set it up, users can follow these simple steps:
1. Search for a relevant news topic on Google.
2. Locate the “Top Stories” carousel displayed.
3. Click the Star Icon or the “Settings” button next to the header.
4. Search for and select your favorite news sites.
Alternatively, users can bypass the search process and directly add preferred sites. For example, if one wishes to prioritize coverage from Chrome Unboxed, they can easily add it by selecting the checkmark next to its name.
In conjunction with the launch of Preferred Sources, Google announced other improvements aimed at enhancing user access to reliable content. A new feature will highlight links from news outlets to which users subscribe, such as The Washington Post or The Guardian. This will initially be available in the Gemini app, with further developments in AI Overviews and AI Mode to follow.
Enhancements to AI-Generated Responses
Google is also refining its “AI Mode” to improve the quality of responses provided by its artificial intelligence systems. This includes an increase in the number of inline links featured in AI-generated answers, as well as the addition of “contextual introductions.” These introductions are designed to clarify why specific sources are cited, addressing ongoing concerns regarding the transparency of attribution in AI-driven content.
The rollout of the “Preferred Sources” feature commenced today, and users who do not yet see the star icon can expect it to appear on their devices in the coming days. This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to empowering users with more control over their news consumption, ensuring that they can easily access trusted information amid the vast array of content available online.
