Maintain Vehicle Safety: Essential Tips for Sensor Care
Ensuring the functionality of your vehicle’s safety systems requires more than just routine cleaning; it involves regular maintenance of various sensors. As the winter months approach, keeping these sensors clean is crucial for optimal performance and safety on the road.
Understanding Your Vehicle’s Safety Sensors
Modern vehicles are equipped with multiple sensors that enhance safety and assist drivers. These technologies include systems such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), all of which rely on clean sensors to operate effectively. Neglecting to maintain these components can compromise their ability to protect you and others on the road.
There are six key sensors to focus on for optimal vehicle safety:
1. **Backup Camera**: The backup camera is essential for reversing safely. It features an anti-reflective coating, making it vulnerable to damage from harsh cleaners. To clean it, gently flush the lens and wipe it with a soft cloth. Using the rear windshield washer can assist in this task. Consider applying a hydrophobic coating to help keep the lens clear between cleanings.
2. **Bumper Sensors**: These circular sensors located in the vehicle’s bumpers are crucial for parking assistance. A soft cloth and a mixture of water and car wash detergent should be sufficient for their upkeep.
3. **Blind Spot Monitor**: Radar sensors situated in the rear body panels detect obstacles in blind spots. Ensure these areas are free from dirt, snow, and salt residue to maintain their functionality.
4. **Forward Collision and Lane Departure Sensors**: Located behind the top centre of the windshield, these sensors require a clean surface for accurate operation. It is advisable to avoid applying hydrophobic windshield treatments in this area, as indicated in many vehicle owner’s manuals, including that of Subaru.
5. **360 Degree Camera**: This camera’s lenses should be cleaned in the same manner as the backup camera’s lens to ensure comprehensive visibility around the vehicle.
6. **Grille Sensors**: Many vehicles house radar sensors behind the front grille. This area must be kept free of snow and ice, as these obstructions can hinder sensor performance.
The Importance of Keeping Sensors Functional
The effectiveness of ADAS systems in other vehicles also depends on the cleanliness of your lights and sensors. These systems utilize your vehicle’s lights to activate features like AEB, providing added protection on the road. Therefore, ensuring that your sensors and lights are clean and functioning correctly is vital for both your safety and that of others.
Tim Schewe, a retired constable with extensive experience in traffic law enforcement, emphasizes the significance of maintaining these systems. “ADAS systems are there to protect you. Don’t turn them off!” he advises.
