Major $10 Billion Data Centre Project Proposed for Olds, Alberta

Central Alberta is poised to become a hub for artificial intelligence with the announcement of a proposed data centre development in Olds. On January 27, 2024, Synapse Data Center Inc. revealed plans for a one-gigawatt facility, representing a substantial investment of $10 billion. The project is expected to bring significant economic and technological benefits to the local and regional community, as stated in a joint media release from the Town of Olds and Invest Olds.

Upon completion, the data centre would be approximately ten times larger than any existing facility in Canada. The construction phase alone is projected to create 2,000 jobs, while once fully operational, the centre is expected to provide over 1,000 high-skilled technology jobs. Olds was chosen for the project due to its strategic advantages, which include direct access to industrial natural gas infrastructure and advanced fibre connectivity.

Jason van Gaal, CEO of Synapse Data Center Inc., emphasized the importance of the community’s proactive approach in securing this investment. “Olds was the clear choice for this $10 billion investment because of the community’s proactive vision and the exceptional responsiveness of Invest Olds and the Town of Olds,” he stated. The location offers unique access to a skilled workforce and robust supply chains, vital for supporting the rapid pace of global technology advancements.

The proposed facility aims to utilize a closed-cycle natural gas power generation system designed to minimize emissions. This system will be self-sufficient, not linked to the provincial electrical grid, thereby alleviating pressure on public infrastructure and enhancing operational reliability. Additionally, the water system will employ a closed-loop design, requiring only a single fill that consumes less than 1 percent of the town’s daily water supply.

The Town of Olds and Invest Olds will pursue all necessary regulatory and environmental approvals through relevant authorities, including the Alberta Utilities Commission and the Alberta Energy Regulator. Mayor Dan Daley expressed pride in Olds being considered for this significant investment.
