MediaTek Unveils Dimensity 8500: A Mid-Range Powerhouse for 2026
MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 8500 chip has made a notable impression in the mid-range smartphone sector, as benchmark results have surfaced on Geekbench. The chip, with the internal code name MT6899, is expected to enhance performance significantly in its category, positioning itself as a strong competitor among mid-range offerings.
Recent findings show the Dimensity 8500 achieving a single-core score of 1,709 and a multi-core score of 6,532 on Geekbench 6. This performance indicates that the chip can efficiently manage demanding multitasking and modern gaming experiences, crucial for users in 2026.
Performance and Architecture
The Dimensity 8500 employs an octa-core configuration that balances speed and energy efficiency. It features one “prime” core operating at 3.40GHz, three performance cores at 3.20GHz, and four efficiency cores at 2.20GHz. The graphics will be powered by the ARM Mali-G720 MC8 GPU, which is designed to run demanding mobile games smoothly at respectable frame rates.
A key aspect of this chip is its emphasis on high-speed stability. The increased speed of the prime core ensures that single-threaded tasks—such as launching applications or capturing high-resolution photographs—are executed with minimal delay. The multi-core performance signals readiness for the intensive software requirements anticipated in the near future, including advanced on-device AI capabilities and intricate image processing tasks.
Devices Featuring the Dimensity 8500
While the Dimensity 8500 stands out as a significant advancement in mobile technology, the devices that will utilize it are also noteworthy. The first confirmed device to feature this chip is the Honor Power 2 (model SER-AN00), which is expected to be equipped with an impressive 10,080mAh battery and a 1.5K OLED display. Such specifications suggest it could become a leader in battery endurance within the market.
Another anticipated device is the POCO X8 Pro, likely debuting in early 2026 as the global version of the Redmi Turbo 5. This smartphone is expected to pair the Dimensity 8500 with a 120Hz AMOLED screen and support for 100W fast charging. POCO is well-known for targeting the “performance-per-dollar” segment, and the inclusion of this innovative MediaTek chip hints at an aspiration to deliver flagship features at a mid-range price point.
As benchmark scores illustrate the potential of the Dimensity 8500, it seems well-positioned to elevate the performance of affordable smartphones.
