MITO Unveils Autonomous Air Purifier That Tackles Pollution Directly
A team of designers from MITO has developed a groundbreaking air purifier capable of autonomously navigating a home to identify and address areas of poor air quality. This innovative device, named MITO, seeks to revolutionize air purification by moving to where it is needed most rather than remaining stationary.
The creators, Yukang Seo, Kyuil Baek, Hakyoun Kim, and Semi Oh, envisioned MITO as a dynamic solution that functions akin to a living ecosystem. The name MITO is derived from mitochondria, the cellular structures responsible for energy production, symbolizing the device’s role as a vital component in maintaining healthy air quality within homes.
How MITO Operates
MITO comprises two key elements that work in tandem: the Sensor Cells and the Core Cell. The Sensor Cells are compact air quality monitors that can be strategically positioned in various rooms. These devices continuously measure levels of CO2, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds. When these measurements fall below a predetermined threshold, the Sensor Cells activate, illuminating red LEDs and displaying clear prompts indicating necessary actions.
The Core Cell, equipped with AI technology, is the autonomous unit that travels throughout the home. It employs advanced LiDAR mapping, obstacle detection, and object recognition to navigate efficiently. When a Sensor Cell alerts that air quality has declined in a specific area, the Core Cell moves to that location to begin intensive purification.
The designers recognized that while automation is beneficial, some situations require human intervention. For instance, when CO2 levels are elevated, simply opening a window can be more effective than relying solely on filtration systems. MITO emphasizes a “hybrid air ecosystem,” guiding users on when to ventilate manually and subsequently assisting with purification.
Design and User Experience
The design of MITO draws inspiration from the principles of 1960s Japanese Metabolist architecture, which conceptualized cities as living organisms that adapt to their environment. This philosophy is evident in MITO’s design, allowing the Core Cell to feature magnetically attached housing panels that can be swapped to match the aesthetics of different rooms.
Aesthetically, MITO stands apart from traditional air purifiers. The Core Cell boasts a sleek, organic shape with ribbed side panels for air intake and a circular top vent for clean air output. The Sensor Cells are designed as rounded rectangles with LED displays that provide real-time information, including a clock face when air quality is satisfactory.
As MITO operates, it learns the airflow patterns and pollution habits specific to each household. It identifies trends, such as increased pollution levels in the kitchen post-dinner or stuffiness in the home office during afternoon hours. By recognizing these patterns, MITO can optimize its cleaning routes accordingly.
In homes with multiple rooms, MITO demonstrates its intelligence by using data from various Sensor Cells to prioritize which area requires immediate attention. While one room may be ventilating naturally through an open window, MITO can direct its purification efforts to another room that needs it most.
This innovative approach highlights the importance of collaboration between smart technology and informed human actions. By clearly communicating its capabilities and limitations, MITO fosters a partnership that enhances air quality without overselling the promise of automation.
Ultimately, MITO represents a shift in how air purifiers are perceived and utilized, emphasizing the need for a balance between technology and human involvement in maintaining a healthy living environment. This product not only adapts to its surroundings but also encourages users to engage actively in the management of their air quality, creating a more realistic and effective solution for modern households.
