New iPhone Models Face Rare Battery Swelling During Flights
Reports have emerged indicating that some newer iPhone models are experiencing a rare battery swelling issue during flights. Users have reported that their devices’ batteries swell while airborne, only to return to normal once the aircraft lands. This phenomenon raises questions about the manufacturing quality of Apple’s latest products and their performance under specific conditions.
Several users, particularly those with the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 15, have shared alarming experiences. One iPhone 16 Pro Max user reported that their battery swelled mid-flight, causing the back panel to separate from the device. Remarkably, the battery returned to its original shape shortly after landing. Another user with an iPhone 15 experienced similar swelling during two separate flights and opted for a battery replacement as a precaution. Fortunately, this replacement resolved the issue, and the swelling has not recurred.
Understanding the Cause of Battery Swelling
The swelling incidents have led to speculation regarding the sensitivity of lithium-ion batteries to changes in cabin pressure. This issue may be more pronounced on older aircraft, which might not maintain cabin pressure as effectively as newer models. While Apple has yet to comment officially on these reports, experts suggest that the swelling could result from gases trapped within the battery.
Under normal atmospheric conditions, the gas remains compressed and undetectable. However, at cruising altitude, the reduced cabin pressure allows the gas to expand, temporarily causing the battery to swell. Once the aircraft descends and the cabin pressure normalizes, the battery appears to revert to its typical form.
Despite being a rare occurrence, this issue affects only a small number of newer iPhone models. Users experiencing battery swelling have been advised to document their instances to facilitate potential battery replacements from Apple. As more reports surface, it remains to be seen how the company will address these concerns and ensure the reliability of its devices.
