Nike Unveils Air Milano Jacket for Team USA at 2026 Olympics
Nike has officially launched the revolutionary Air Milano jacket at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. This innovative garment, designed to enhance athlete performance, is now worn by members of Team USA during medal ceremonies, marking a significant endorsement of its capabilities.
The Air Milano jacket stands out not merely as a novelty but as a serious advancement in sportswear technology. According to Martin Lotti, Nike’s Chief Design Officer, the company has leveraged air as a cushioning technology in footwear for nearly fifty years. Yet, Lotti emphasizes that the potential applications of air remain largely untapped.
The jacket’s design addresses a common issue faced by runners: temperature regulation. Runners often begin their workouts in cold conditions only to warm up significantly as they exercise. Traditionally, this leads to the cumbersome practice of tying jackets around the waist. The Air Milano offers a solution; it inflates using a small battery-powered fan through a valve located on the front. In approximately twenty seconds, the garment transitions from a lightweight windbreaker to a mid-weight puffer. Athletes can also cool down by pressing the same valve to release air, allowing for real-time adjustments without interrupting their pace.
A pivotal advantage of the Air Milano is its weight-to-warmth ratio. Traditional down jackets suffer when wet, as the insulating feathers clump together, rendering them ineffective. The Air Milano, utilizing air as insulation, maintains its performance regardless of moisture, ensuring it remains lightweight and warm.
This jacket showcases Nike’s new A.I.R. Technology, which stands for Adapt, Inflate, Regulate. The design is informed by body mapping data from Nike’s Sport Research Lab, employing computational design techniques to strategically position air where it is most needed for warmth.
The Team USA version of the Air Milano features custom details, including sculpted design elements, a specialized ACG pump, and a unique interior lining graphic depicting the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, where Team USA trains. Notably, accessibility features, such as interior thumb loops and a magnetic zipper, have been incorporated to assist Paralympic athletes in independently donning and securing the jacket.
Nike has a history of experimenting with inflatable outerwear dating back two decades, starting with the ACG Airvantage jacket. The Air Milano represents a significant evolution in both technology and usability. It is lighter, inflates more rapidly, and solves practical issues faced by athletes rather than serving merely as a technical curiosity.
Lotti maintains that the Air Milano is not a gimmick but a genuine response to the challenges athletes encounter during their runs. This approach to innovation highlights the difference between creating products for the sake of novelty and developing designs that enhance athletic performance.
The Air Milano is part of Nike’s broader FIT system, which encompasses various technologies like Therma-FIT for insulation, Aero-FIT for cooling, Dri-FIT for moisture-wicking, and Storm-FIT for weather protection. This system is designed to meet specific needs for adaptive warmth under changing conditions, rather than replacing existing jackets.
Seeing Team USA athletes don the Air Milano on the podium in Milan adds a distinct context to its introduction. It is now recognized as performance gear tested at the highest levels of competition, showcasing Nike’s confidence in its ability to meet real-world demands.
