Northlander Train Service Set to Return to Ontario in 2026
Ontario’s beloved passenger train service, the Northlander, is making a comeback, with details about its service schedule and stops now confirmed. The revitalized service will reconnect travelers between Toronto’s Union Station and Timmins, offering a range of enhancements for passengers.
According to Ontario Northland, the Northlander will make northbound and southbound stops in key locations including Huntsville, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Washago, and Gormley. In total, the train will travel a distance of approximately 1,400 kilometers, making 16 stops along the route as it re-establishes a vital passenger rail corridor across the region.
While the exact date for the Northlander’s inaugural trip is still to be determined, the return of the service is anticipated in 2026. The frequency of the train service will vary, operating four to seven days a week depending on seasonal travel demands. As of now, inquiries made by Metroland to Ontario Northland regarding the specific start date have gone unanswered.
Passengers eager to travel on the Northlander will appreciate the planned service schedule, which has been announced by Ontario Northland. Ticket prices have yet to be finalized, but the organization assures prospective riders that affordability remains a priority. “We recognize affordability is important to passengers and Ontario Northland is committed to meeting those expectations,” the company stated on its website.
Enhanced Features for Travelers
The Northlander will feature modernized and renovated shelters and stations equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, reliable heating, and real-time train arrival updates. The service marks a new era for the Northlander, which will introduce one new locomotive along with three new passenger cars. These upgrades promise comfortable seating, power outlets, wide aisles, adjustable tray tables, spacious storage, and overhead reading lights.
Travelers can expect a smoother experience as ongoing track and infrastructure upgrades are implemented. Improvements in fuel efficiency and accessibility, alongside lower operational costs, are also part of the enhancements aimed at ensuring a safer and more pleasant ride from start to finish.
The return of the Northlander not only rekindles a cherished travel option for Ontarians but also aims to foster economic growth and connectivity in the region. As plans continue to develop, further announcements regarding ticket pricing and the launch date are expected to be released, keeping the public informed about this significant transportation revival.
