Sidney/North Saanich RCMP Alert Residents to Asphalt Paving Scam

Residents in Sidney and North Saanich have received a warning from local police regarding a door-to-door asphalt paving scam. The alert follows an incident where a crew approached a homeowner, started work on a driveway, and left abruptly without completing the job.

On October 12, 2023, officers from the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP were contacted by a resident who reported an encounter with a man offering to pave driveways using leftover asphalt materials at a discounted rate. According to Const. Benje Bartley, a media spokesperson for the RCMP, a group of approximately eight individuals arrived at the residence and began the paving work.

The situation took a concerning turn when the homeowner noticed that the asphalt appeared to lack oil or tar and seemed to be recycled material. This observation raised suspicions, prompting the resident to confront the crew. In response, the workers quickly gathered their materials and left the site, leaving the driveway unpaved.

The RCMP have confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident. “Sidney/North Saanich RCMP would like to caution the public about this suspected scam and to report any suspicious activity to police immediately,” Bartley stated.

This warning comes on the heels of two similar incidents reported in Sooke earlier in the same week, where seniors were approached by men selling discounted asphalt. The pattern of these encounters has raised alarms among local law enforcement, emphasizing the need for vigilance among residents.

Residents are advised to be cautious when approached by individuals offering unsolicited services, particularly those involving home improvements. It is recommended to verify the legitimacy of any such offers and to seek multiple quotes from reputable contractors before agreeing to any work.
