A U.S.-based venture capital firm, Forum Ventures, is making significant investments in Canada’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector to foster the next generation of AI companies. The firm, which established a studio in Toronto in 2023, plans to leverage Canada’s extensive pool of AI talent to launch 18 new companies over the next two years, according to Managing Partner Jonah Midnaik in an interview with BNN Bloomberg.

Currently, Forum Ventures has already launched 17 companies and is actively raising funds to bolster its initiatives. “For this one, we’ve raised about US$25 million and we’ll be back out on the street hoping to add to that tally,” Midnaik stated. The firm aims to cultivate international champions from Toronto, leveraging the city’s rich history in AI advancements.

Midnaik highlighted Toronto’s prominent role in the evolution of AI, noting that significant contributions have emerged from the region. He pointed out that the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI hails from Toronto, and Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in neural networks, conducted his groundbreaking work in the city. “So that massive pool of artificial intelligence talent is what we’re betting on,” he added.

Despite Canada’s impressive track record in producing AI talent, Midnaik acknowledged ongoing challenges. He noted that many founders are relocating to the U.S. in search of greater capital and support, a trend that has intensified in recent years. “Only $2.1 billion was raised for venture funds last year in Canada, the lowest number we’ve had in years,” he mentioned. Furthermore, he pointed out that the number of venture-backed businesses in the U.S. has grown to 25 times that of Canada, up from 11 times in 2015.

Midnaik is committed to demonstrating to founders that they can build successful companies in Canada, similar to Shopify. He believes that by surrounding them with top-tier talent, they can create global winners without leaving the country. “We’re hoping we can show them they can stay here, build global winners here, and add more Canadian jobs here,” he elaborated.

The response from the market has been encouraging, with downstream investors increasingly backing Canadian businesses. Midnaik stated, “We’ve had some of the biggest venture capital firms in the world invest in some of these businesses and back some of our Canadian founders, and some of our builds. We’re hoping to see that trend continue.”

As Forum Ventures forges ahead with its ambitious plans, it underscores the potential within Canada’s AI landscape, aiming to position Toronto as a significant player in the global technology arena.
