UK Studio Denizen Works Unveils Serene House in Onomichi
A new architectural project in Onomichi, Japan, crafted by the UK studio Denizen Works, presents a unique approach to residential design by prioritizing privacy and connection to nature. The House in Onomichi features a nearly blank façade facing the street, which Murray Kerr, founder of Denizen Works, describes as possessing an “enigmatic quality.” This design choice reflects a deep understanding of how privacy can enhance the living experience.
The clients, a couple who previously resided in London, sought a tranquil retreat upon their return to Japan. Rather than simply creating a house, they envisioned a private sanctuary. Denizen Works skillfully combined elements of traditional Japanese architecture with contemporary design, striking a balance that honors cultural heritage while ensuring modern functionality.
Innovative Design Meets Traditional Concepts
The house is comprised of two distinct structures, unified by a covered entrance walkway. The main house, which spans two stories, includes a single bedroom, while an adjoining single-storey studio partially encloses a modest garden. This layout is inspired by the traditional Japanese concept of Omoya and Hanare, which denotes the main house and an annex, respectively. This separation effectively designates areas for living and working, a distinction that has become increasingly important for those working from home.
The exterior of both structures is adorned with vertical burnt-timber Yakisugi, a time-honored Japanese technique that involves charring wood to enhance its durability. The result is a striking black finish that enhances the visual appeal while offering protection. While Yakisugi has gained popularity in contemporary architecture, its use in this project feels deeply rooted and appropriate, establishing a dialogue between the past and present.
A Harmonious Relationship Between Interior and Exterior
One of the most compelling aspects of this project is its handling of the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. Although the street-facing side is designed to be closed off, the rear opens wide to reveal stunning views of the Setonaikai islands. This design approach embodies a classic principle in Japanese architecture: the creation of a private oasis within a public setting. The garden, though small, acts as a buffer, allowing the interior to feel expansive without compromising the sense of seclusion.
The collaboration between Denizen Works and Tokyo-based Take Architects was instrumental in navigating the complexities of building in Japan. This partnership exemplifies how cross-cultural architectural collaborations can yield a genuine synthesis of ideas rather than mere compromise. The outcome demonstrates that thoughtful design can transcend cultural boundaries when grounded in mutual respect and understanding.
For a studio renowned for its residential designs in the UK, this project marks a significant milestone. The House in Onomichi successfully embodies the clients’ desires for calm, privacy, and a connection to the local environment. By incorporating traditional materials and spatial concepts, the design maintains authenticity without appearing contrived. Over time, the burnt timber will weather and age, while the garden will flourish, allowing the residence to settle harmoniously within its context.
The understated elegance of this architecture stands out in an era when residential designs often seek attention on social media platforms. By presenting a closed façade to the street and reserving its more dramatic features for private moments, the house cultivates a unique lifestyle that prioritizes the views of the Setonaikai islands over those from the street. In doing so, Denizen Works demonstrates a profound understanding of the clients’ desire for tranquility and connection, ultimately transforming their vision into a beautifully realized home.
