Algonquin and Lakeshore School Board Achieves High Graduation Rates
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) has achieved notable recognition for its graduation rates, ranking among the top 12 of the 72 school boards in Ontario. According to a recent news release, the ALCDSB is fourth among all English-speaking school boards in the province, showcasing its commitment to educational excellence.
This assessment is based on data compiled from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for the 2023-2024 academic year, along with information from the Ontario School Information System (OSIS). The results indicate that ALCDSB’s graduation rates have consistently exceeded the provincial average for the past four years. Notably, the graduation rate for the 2020-2021 academic year stood at an impressive 91.4 percent.
Commitment to Student Success
Sonya Melim, Superintendent of Education at ALCDSB, highlighted the board’s dedication to supporting students at risk of not graduating. She emphasized the implementation of a tiered system of intervention and individualized programming that ensures all students receive the necessary support to succeed.
“We are beyond proud of our graduation rates, which stand as a testament to the dedicated work being done to foster excellence,” Melim stated. This commitment reflects a broader strategy aimed at promoting student achievement and addressing the diverse needs within the student population.
To earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students must complete a total of 30 credits, consisting of 17 compulsory credits and 13 electives. Additionally, they are required to pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, complete 40 hours of community service, and earn a minimum of two online credits. These requirements are designed to ensure that graduates are well-prepared for post-secondary education or the workforce.
The ALCDSB’s strong performance in graduation rates not only underscores its effective educational strategies but also positions it as a leader among Ontario school boards. As student success remains a priority, the board continues to implement programs and initiatives that support learners in achieving their academic goals.
