Calgarians Honor Lost Loved Ones Amid Iranian Protests
Calgary’s Iranian community gathered on January 28, 2023, to honor the memory of loved ones lost amidst escalating conflict in Iran. The memorial, hosted by The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church, drew several hundred attendees, reflecting the deep emotional ties within the community.
Many of those remembered during the gathering were casualties from protests against the Iranian government in early January. According to Azita Afsharnejat, manager of mental health and family well-being for TIES, “The people went out in the street, and they were just asking for the basic things that they really needed, and then they were shot.” This stark reminder of violence has left numerous families in anguish, as the Iranian authorities imposed an internet shutdown during the protests, resulting in an unclear but estimated death toll in the tens of thousands.
The memorial served as a crucial space for community members who have been unable to mourn alongside their families in Iran. Afsharnejat emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Our Iranian community here didn’t have a chance to mourn with their families. We have some families here that lost their loved ones but couldn’t go back to their home country.”
Community Support and Solidarity
Attendees expressed a collective sense of grief and solidarity throughout the memorial. The gathering provided an opportunity for individuals to share their stories, reflect on their losses, and connect with others facing similar heartaches. The atmosphere was filled with both sorrow and a determination to keep the memories of those lost alive.
Community leaders and members highlighted the necessity of such gatherings during difficult times. They reiterated that the memorial was not only for remembering the deceased but also aimed to support those who felt isolated in their grief. The gathering allowed individuals to acknowledge their pain and find comfort in shared experiences.
The event also featured speeches and moments of reflection, with participants lighting candles in honor of their loved ones. These acts of remembrance served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by those in Iran and the resilience of the Iranian diaspora.
As conflicts continue to escalate in the region, the Calgary Iranian community faces the challenge of supporting one another while holding on to the memories of those who have perished. The memorial exemplified their strength and unity, reinforcing their shared human spirit in the face of adversity.
Through events like this, the community not only preserves the memories of their loved ones but also continues to advocate for change and justice in Iran. The resilience shown by these individuals underscores the importance of community support, especially in times of crisis.
