A fatal altercation at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon has sparked a dispute between police and the family of the deceased. On January 9, 2024, 36-year-old Trevor Dubois died following an encounter with hospital security. Police allege that an imitation firearm was found in Dubois’s hospital room, a claim that his family vehemently contests.

According to the Saskatoon Police, law enforcement officers responded to a report of a death shortly after 07:00 on the morning of January 9. The police stated that upon entering the room, security personnel encountered an individual with an imitation firearm, along with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. During an attempt to restrain Dubois, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in him becoming unresponsive.

The family of Dubois held a news conference organized by the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) on Monday, where they argued that the alleged firearm was merely a cigarette holder and lighter adorned in pink and yellow colors. They insisted that this mischaracterization has caused additional grief during an already tragic time.

Ongoing Investigations and Health Authority Response

In response to the incident, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has initiated an internal review, classifying it as a “critical incident.” The SHA confirmed that they are collaborating with the STC to provide support to Dubois’s family and loved ones, while also addressing the needs of staff impacted by the event.

As of now, both the police investigation and the SHA’s review remain active. The SHA has not released further details regarding the findings from their internal inquiry.

The incident has raised numerous questions about safety protocols within hospital environments and the responsibilities of security personnel. As investigations continue, the community is left to grapple with the implications of this tragic event.

Further updates are expected as both the Saskatoon Police and the SHA continue their respective inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death of Trevor Dubois.
