Innovators Unite at 2026 Winnipeg Open Data Datathon
On March 11, 2026, data enthusiasts gathered in the Exchange District of Winnipeg for the 2026 Winnipeg Open Data Datathon. This event, hosted collaboratively by the City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Economic Development and Tourism, Canada Computing, and Launch Coworking, challenged participants to create innovative smart city products using datasets from the city’s Open Data Portal.
The theme for this year’s datathon was “smart city,” a concept that encompasses a wide range of interpretations. According to Justin Dallmann, a data scientist with the city, the event was designed to encourage creativity and collaboration among participants. “Smart City is a really broad term and it is used differently by different people,” he explained. The focus was on utilizing data to improve citizens’ lives, which could involve anything from traffic analytics to environmental monitoring.
Participants ranged from students embarking on their data careers to seasoned professionals and academics. Dallmann noted the diversity of expertise present, stating, “We have students who are just getting started in their data careers, we have professors who have worked on it, and industry professionals. It really spans the gamut.” Attendees brought skills in areas such as spatial analysis, statistics, artificial intelligence, and data visualization.
The datathon aimed to highlight the significance of data science beyond just smart city applications. Dallmann emphasized the accountability aspect of data, noting that open datasets can help ensure government transparency and responsiveness to public expectations. He remarked, “There’s an accountability aspect to it, like making sure that the government is doing what they should be doing and keeping up with expectations of the public.”
The datasets available for use at the event included critical information on traffic patterns, urban development, and permitting data. Dallmann pointed out the practical benefits of this information, stating, “Imagine you are a planner. It’s going to be really helpful to know traffic patterns – how they are changing, which areas of the city are building or tearing things down.” This kind of data, he added, is invaluable for industries operating within the city, including insights on assessment and taxation.
As technology continues to evolve, Dallmann advised prospective data scientists to remain engaged with current trends and developments. He stated, “It’s really important to come out to events like this and to keep up on your credentialing and studies, so that you can be at the forefront.” The datathon not only fostered innovation but also encouraged networking and collaboration among the next generation of data professionals.
Overall, the 2026 Winnipeg Open Data Datathon served as a platform for creativity, learning, and community engagement, with participants eager to leverage open data for the betterment of their city. The event underscored the vital role that accessible data can play in shaping smarter, more responsive urban environments.
