New Board Closes Rustic Table Amid Financial Struggles

BIBLE HILL – The Rustic Table has officially closed its doors following a decision by the newly appointed board of the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC). The restaurant, located within the grandstand building of the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition (NSPE) grounds, ceased operations due to ongoing financial difficulties.

The closure was announced on the restaurant’s website, which stated that the venue had faced “consistent financial strain” since its opening in July 2024. According to the announcement, the restaurant incurred a loss of approximately $110,000 over a nine-month period ending December 31, 2023. The board determined that continuing operations would require governmental financial support, which they deemed unsustainable.

In the announcement, the board acknowledged the Rustic Table’s role in the community, especially during events like the Nova Scotia Stampede. However, it noted that outside of such occasions, the restaurant had been generating consistent losses, with limited ability to cover rising operational costs.

Kevin Bushey, vice-president of major events and hospitality for Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre Society Ltd. (CNSSE), expressed frustration over the decision, describing it as abrupt and lacking prior discussion. “This was a shotgun decision,” Bushey remarked, stating that he was informed of the closure in a meeting last week without any advance notice to his team. He contended that the financial figures presented by the board were inaccurate, emphasizing that the society is undergoing a year-end audit and that a full assessment had not yet been completed.

The impact of the closure extends beyond financial losses, as Bushey revealed that nine staff members were laid off as a result. He also noted a growing sense of uncertainty among remaining employees at the RECC, with concerns about job security following the closure.

In an email statement dated February 20, 2024, RECC board chair Tim Johnson reiterated that the decision was driven purely by financial realities. He mentioned that during a meeting in February, the board reviewed a financial analysis detailing the restaurant’s losses. “It was evident that we just couldn’t keep absorbing these losses month after month,” Johnson stated, adding that the losses would ultimately be borne by taxpayers in the Town of Truro and the Municipality of Colchester.

Johnson clarified that neither the Town of Truro Council nor the Municipality of Colchester Council had been informed or had approved the restaurant’s operation on the NSPE grounds. He and vice chair Deb Pryor communicated the closure to senior staff on February 17, 2024, emphasizing the immediate need to cease operations due to financial impracticalities.

During the subsequent meeting with staff, Johnson conveyed a message of collaboration despite the turmoil. “Despite everything that has transpired over the past several months, even though you may not like how things have turned out, we need you and you need us,” he said. He also noted the board’s commitment to working with senior staff to enhance programs and events at the RECC.

As the community processes the closure of a venue that had become a staple, the RECC board faces the challenge of restoring focus and improving the facility’s offerings. The situation highlights the delicate balance between operational viability and community service in local governance.
