New Boutique Hotel Planned for Historic Chinatown in Vancouver

Vancouver’s Chinatown is poised for a significant transformation with plans for a new boutique hotel. The project involves converting the existing five-storey building at 88 East Pender St., located adjacent to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and the Chinese Cultural Centre. A development permit application has been submitted to renovate the property, which has served various purposes over the years, including as a campus for the Vancouver Film School.

Originally built in 1984, the building functioned as a site for game design and programming until recently. Before that, it housed the Vancouver station for OMNI Television, a multilingual broadcaster owned by Rogers. The proposed renovation, designed by WA Architects, will transform this property into a boutique hotel featuring 57 guest rooms on the upper levels.

Hotel Features and Economic Impact

The ground level of the hotel will include a lobby with a 24/7 front desk and a bar and lounge area capable of accommodating 73 guests in various seating arrangements. Notably, one existing retail unit will remain operational, maintaining direct access from East Pender Street. The hotel’s total floor area will be nearly 40,000 sq. ft., and it will feature two underground levels dedicated to parking, providing space for 32 vehicles.

While the project does not yet have a confirmed hotel brand or operator, it is expected to boost economic activity in the Chinatown area. This initiative is particularly significant as the district has faced challenges in recent years. The hotel follows the opening of the Keefer House boutique hotel, located just southeast at 123 Keefer St., which debuted last year with 58 guest suites suitable for both short-term and long-term stays.

Future Developments in Chinatown

Additionally, the municipal government’s development permit board approved a controversial project by the Beedie Group for a new building at 570 Columbia St., previously called 105 Keefer St.. This nine-storey mixed-use development will include condominiums, retail spaces, restaurants, and a publicly accessible courtyard. Construction of this building will alter the landscape of the area, potentially overshadowing the Keefer House, which is distinguished by its striking heart-shaped mural.

The proposed hotel at 88 East Pender St. represents a notable step in revitalizing Chinatown, providing both accommodation and additional economic activity to a district in need of support.
