North Star Air Launches New Flight Route Between Kenora and Thunder Bay
A new direct flight service connecting Kenora and Thunder Bay, Ontario, will begin on January 15, 2026. This partnership between the Kenora Airport Authority and North Star Air aims to provide a quicker and more efficient travel option for residents of both communities, replacing the previous airline service discontinued by Bearskin Airlines in May 2024.
The journey by road between the two cities typically takes around five-and-a-half hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. With the introduction of this air service, travelers can expect to make the trip in just one hour. This change is particularly significant for residents who have been without regular commercial airline services since Bearskin’s departure.
Ryan Reynard, chairman of the Kenora Airport Authority, expressed enthusiasm over the new route, stating, “This new partnership with North Star Air marks an exciting milestone for the Kenora Airport and our community.” He highlighted that the direct link to Thunder Bay will enhance the regional transportation network, facilitating access to essential services, commerce, and tourism opportunities across northern Ontario.
North Star Air is a well-established Canadian airline providing scheduled passenger services, charter flights, and cargo operations throughout northern Ontario, Manitoba, and Nunavut. In a statement, Jeff Stout, president and chief operating officer of North Star Air, noted, “This new route reflects our commitment to helping communities stay connected and supporting economic growth across the region.”
Community Impact and Economic Benefits
With a population of approximately 15,000 residents, Kenora’s mayor, Andrew Poirier, expressed his excitement about the service’s return, particularly given the challenges posed by the region’s highways. “They’re very dangerous and there’s a lot of people that refuse to travel on them, which creates its own set of problems,” Poirier explained. He believes that the new air service will not only boost tourism but also improve access to healthcare facilities, making it easier for residents to attend medical appointments.
Many people currently travel to Thunder Bay for healthcare services, and the construction of a new hospital in Kenora is expected to increase demand for such flights. Poirier emphasized that this scheduled air service will significantly enhance travel convenience. “You basically save a day,” he said, contrasting the one-hour flight with the lengthy drive that could take upwards of 11 hours round trip.
The mayor also pointed out the importance of aligning the flight schedules with other airlines operating out of Thunder Bay. This coordination is expected to streamline travel for those frequently commuting for work or personal reasons.
Future Plans and Collaboration
The Kenora Airport Authority plans to collaborate closely with regional partners, municipalities, and tourism organizations to ensure that the new service meets the evolving needs of the community. A launch event is scheduled for December 20, 2025, at the Kenora Airport, where further details about the service will be shared.
As the region moves forward, the introduction of this air service represents a vital step toward restoring regular commercial airline connectivity. It promises to enhance travel options for residents and support economic growth in Kenora, Thunder Bay, and surrounding areas. The community eagerly anticipates the launch, looking forward to the benefits that this new service will bring.
