Nova Scotia Set for Historic Space Launch on November 18

A significant milestone in Canadian aerospace history is set for November 18, 2023, as a test vehicle launches from Nova Scotia. Maritime Launch Services (MLS), the company behind the Spaceport Nova Scotia initiative in Canso, is collaborating with the Dutch firm T-minus Engineering to send a vehicle 100 kilometres into the atmosphere. This altitude is known as the Kármán line, marking the boundary of space.

Stephen Matier, the founder of Maritime Launch Services, stated during an interview on The Todd Veinotte Show that this launch will be the first of its kind from Canada in 27 years. Communities surrounding Canso, including Hazel Hill and Little Dover, will have a view of the launch, although Matier noted that the sound might not be very loud.

Path to Commercial Space Operations

The upcoming launch is part of a broader vision to establish a fully operational spaceport capable of supporting both commercial and government satellite launches. Matier likened the planned operations to how an airport serves airlines, emphasizing the potential impact on the aerospace industry in Canada.

The company aims to facilitate orbital launches by as early as 2026. In August, MLS secured a partnership with Montreal’s Reaction Dynamics Inc. This agreement is pivotal as it paves the way for the first-ever orbital launch of a Canadian-designed and built rocket from Spaceport Nova Scotia.

Matier expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We are looking forward to continuing that development and really kicking in some construction activities next spring to get that site up and running.” The foundation of these agreements and recent funding announcements provides a positive outlook for the team as they work toward achieving key milestones in the coming year.
