Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Diana Gibson Tackles Housing Crisis
The past year has seen significant developments for Diana Gibson, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. Since taking office, Gibson has focused on addressing the pressing issue of affordable housing within her constituency. Following her election win and subsequent cabinet appointment, she has actively engaged in initiatives aimed at enhancing the living conditions for her constituents.
One of the key projects that Gibson has championed is a $50 million, 95-unit affordable housing development launched in partnership with the District of Saanich and community health-care provider Luther Court in August 2023. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to alleviating housing shortages in the region. “Our government’s been very involved in helping to get all of these projects moving forward,” Gibson stated, highlighting her dedication to ensuring that new housing opportunities arise in her riding.
In addition to this development, Gibson has supported plans for a proposed project on the University of Victoria’s Cedar Hill Corners property. She noted the importance of increasing student housing availability, which in turn can free up more homes for families. “We’ve been looking at other student housing as well, and it certainly helps to make a difference in the Gordon Head area,” she said, underscoring her focus on comprehensive community needs.
Enhancing Seniors’ Care
Gibson’s commitment extends beyond housing; she has also dedicated efforts towards improving access to seniors’ care. Throughout 2025, she collaborated with the District of Oak Bay, the Ministry of Housing, and the Capital Regional Hospitals District to facilitate the construction of a new facility on the former site of the Oak Bay Lodge. The Lodge, which served as a long-term care facility for over 200 seniors, was demolished in 2022 after being deemed no longer viable.
Local residents have advocated for the establishment of a new campus of care on this site, and Gibson has been working diligently to bring the involved parties together. “I’ve been bringing together all of the parties involved in getting the Oak Bay Lodge site built,” she explained. Currently, various proposals from a consultant are under review, with discussions ongoing between ministry staff and health organizations to determine the best path forward.
“I’m working to get it done as fast as I can,” Gibson stated emphatically. “We need more seniors’ care in our community.” This focus on enhancing care services aligns with her broader vision for community development and well-being.
Future Priorities
Looking ahead to 2026, Gibson affirms that housing will continue to be a primary concern. She aims to connect her constituents with family doctors more efficiently, stating her intention to “actively work to ensure that we’re supporting clinics to recruit doctors.” This includes fast-tracking doctor recruitment at the provincial level and ensuring local clinics receive adequate support.
Gibson, who previously held the position of minister of jobs before leading the Ministry of Citizens’ Services, recognizes the challenges ahead. She remarked, “There’s a lot of heavy lifting to be done around ensuring people have access to the services they need.” This involves addressing connectivity issues and focusing on the security of public digital infrastructure.
As Gibson continues her work in the B.C. Legislature, her determination to improve housing and healthcare services demonstrates her commitment to the constituents of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. With ongoing projects and initiatives, she aims to foster a community that meets the diverse needs of its residents.
