Police Seek Witnesses Following Two Related Arson Attempts

York Regional Police are appealing for witnesses after two attempted arsons believed to be linked occurred in the early hours of February 11, 2024. The incidents took place in Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville and involved suspects attempting to set fire to businesses using an accelerant.

At approximately 02:00, police received reports of two individuals breaking into a plaza located at the intersection of Highway 7 East and Ninth Line in Markham. Witnesses observed the suspects trying to ignite a fire, although the flames did not spread and were described as “self-extinguished.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the buildings were unoccupied at the time.

After the initial incident, the suspects fled eastbound on Highway 7. It was later confirmed that they were driven to the plaza in a white Audi SUV. Police tracked the vehicle, which was seen again at a plaza near Ringwood Drive and Main Street in Whitchurch-Stouffville around 03:30. Authorities noted that the suspects were again seen breaking into a business and attempting to start a fire.

Descriptions and Investigative Efforts

The police have released images of the suspects, including one of the vehicle involved. The first suspect is described as wearing a dark-coloured hooded sweatshirt, track pants, white shoes, and grey gloves. The second suspect wore a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes, and white gloves. A description for a potential third suspect has not yet been provided.
