Portable MRI Revolutionizes Neurosurgery at London Health Sciences Centre
The introduction of a portable MRI machine at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is transforming neurosurgery, according to Dr. Neil Duggal, a leading neurosurgeon at the facility. This innovative technology is expected to enhance patient care by allowing scans to be conducted directly at the bedside of intensive care patients. Currently, it is making a significant impact on surgical procedures, as demonstrated in the case of Dave Evans, who underwent brain surgery earlier this year.
Significant Advances in Patient Care
Dave Evans, a resident of Owen Sound, discovered he had a slow-growing tumor after years of attributing his fading vision to aging. “The best analogy I have is that you have a TV set, and it diminishes by 1% a month. Over the course of a couple of years, it’s significant, but you don’t notice any immediate changes,” Evans explained. His doctor suspected a more serious issue and conducted further testing, ultimately revealing a pituitary tumor that required surgical intervention.
Dr. Duggal and his team faced the complex task of removing a tumor the size of an average human thumbnail. He described the procedure as similar to draining an eggshell, emphasizing the delicate nature of the operation. “We don’t want to violate the boundaries of the eggshell, because on both sides, the carotid arteries are there. And then on the top are the nerves that transmit information from the eyes to the back of the brain,” he stated.
Immediate Benefits from New Technology
The newly acquired portable MRI played a crucial role during Evans’ surgery, allowing the surgical team to assess their progress in real-time. “Have we gotten what we intended to get, and is there any residual that we can get easily and safely before we close?” Dr. Duggal noted the importance of this immediate feedback. In Evans’ case, the MRI detected a small portion of the tumor that had gone unnoticed. As a result, the surgical team could re-enter and remove the remaining tissue, effectively eliminating the need for a subsequent surgery.
“Eliminating a potential repeat surgery, I think that’s a game changer!” exclaimed Dr. Duggal.
Evans expressed his gratitude towards the health care team and the Hyperfine Swoop Brain Portable MRI system shortly after regaining consciousness in the recovery room. “It was in the neurosurgery ICU that I realized how much better my eyesight was already, even just the day of the surgery,” he said.
Since its introduction, the portable MRI has been made available to a broader range of surgical teams at LHSC. Dr. Duggal emphasized the extensive possibilities for its application, stating, “It could save morbidity; it could save complications. It can be brought to the intensive care unit right beside the patient’s bed, eliminating the risks related to transport.”
The arrival of this technology marks a significant advancement in neurosurgery, enhancing both the precision of procedures and the overall safety of patients. As the medical community continues to explore its full potential, the portable MRI stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of health care innovation.
