Quebec Hospitals Invest Millions to Enhance Emergency Room Security
Concerns over violence in emergency rooms have prompted significant investments in security at hospitals across Quebec. Notably, the Notre-Dame Hospital in Montreal recently implemented new safety measures, including mandatory metal detectors for all patients entering its emergency room. This enhancement was introduced approximately three weeks ago and aims to foster a safer environment for both patients and staff.
The regional health authority, CISSS Centre Sud de l’Ile de Montreal, emphasized that these measures are crucial for ensuring the safety of individuals visiting the hospital. Isabelle Allaire, the Interim Director of Nursing at CIUSSS Centre Sud de l’Ile de Montreal, stated that the decision to increase security was made following an alarming incident involving two men who engaged in a knife fight in the emergency room in 2023.
In response to ongoing safety concerns, the hospital has provided employees with panic buttons and implemented various other security protocols over recent years. The union representing hospital staff, STTCCSMTL-CSN, has expressed satisfaction with the newly introduced measures, highlighting a rise in incidents involving weapons, including knives and even a firearm.
The CIUSSS acknowledged the need for enhanced security due to the nature of some patients frequenting the hospital, many of whom may be dealing with mental health issues. These additions to safety protocols are part of a broader trend; the Muhc reported spending nearly $10 million on security personnel from 2024 to 2025, noting that the role of security staff has evolved significantly in recent years.
At Notre-Dame Hospital, early reports indicate that the increased security measures are yielding positive results. Officials have noted a 50 percent reduction in documented assaults over the past three years, suggesting that these initiatives are effectively addressing safety concerns within the emergency department.
As hospitals across Quebec continue to adapt to the realities of providing healthcare in challenging environments, the focus on security measures reflects a commitment to safeguarding both patients and healthcare professionals. With ongoing challenges, further investments in security are likely to remain a priority for healthcare facilities in the region.
