Snowfall Warning in Toronto: Up to 10 cm Expected Today

Toronto is currently under a moderate snowfall warning as an Alberta clipper brings significant winter weather to the city. According to Environment Canada, residents can expect up to 10 centimetres of snow today, with conditions likely to affect travel throughout the region.

As early as 6:00 a.m., Environment Canada issued the warning, stating that the snow could become heavy at times, particularly this morning. The forecast indicates that the snowfall will taper off to scattered flurries and drizzle by this afternoon. Along the shores of Lake Ontario, lighter snowfall amounts are expected, with a potential transition to rain or a rain-snow mix.

The snowfall has already impacted road safety across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). At approximately 8:30 a.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported multiple crashes, including a transport truck rollover on the westbound lanes of Highway 402 near Glendon Drive. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt noted that road conditions are slick, resulting in slow-moving traffic. So far, police have responded to around two dozen incidents on the highways, but there are no significant collisions reported at this time.

In response to the winter weather, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced that it is actively managing conditions across its network. This includes clearing snow and spreading salt on platforms, stairs, and other surfaces. The TTC confirmed that more staff have been deployed to ensure safety and operational efficiency during this inclement weather.

Meteorologist Bill Coulter from CP24 has indicated that the northern regions of the city are likely to experience heavier, wetter snow today. The snow accumulation is expected to create challenging travel conditions, prompting school boards in the GTA to cancel bus services for the morning. This includes cancellations in both York Region and Durham Region.

Environment Canada has advised residents to prepare for quickly changing conditions. Visibility may be reduced at times, and roads and walkways are expected to become difficult to navigate due to accumulated snow. The weather advisory warns that these conditions could significantly impact rush hour traffic, urging travelers to allow extra time for their journeys.
