Veteran Tory MLA Ron Schuler Announces Retirement from Politics
Ron Schuler, a long-serving member of Manitoba’s legislature, has declared he will not seek re-election after a distinguished 27-year career. The Progressive Conservative MLA for Springfield-Ritchot made the announcement through a news release, confirming he will continue to serve his constituents until the next election, scheduled for October 5, 2027.
Schuler has held significant roles within the provincial cabinet, starting under former Premier Brian Pallister. His cabinet appointments included minister of Crown services and minister of infrastructure. He also engaged in various critic roles during his time in opposition, covering areas such as labour, immigration, environment, energy, science and technology, and Manitoba Hydro and housing.
In his statement, Schuler expressed gratitude to the voters of East St. Paul, Niverville, Ritchot, Springfield, and West St. Paul, acknowledging their support over the last 26 years. He also thanked his children, Brigitta, Stefan, and Corina, for their unwavering love and support, and he looks forward to spending more time with his family in the future.
Since his election in 1999, Schuler has won seven elections, often by substantial margins. His political journey included a leadership bid in 2006, where he placed second to Hugh McFadyen, who would lead the party until 2012. After Pallister became premier in 2016, Schuler was appointed minister of Crown services, overseeing Crown corporations such as Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba Public Insurance.
In 2017, he transitioned to the role of infrastructure minister but faced challenges in 2021 when Premier Heather Stefanson removed him from cabinet following a prolonged silence regarding his COVID-19 vaccination status. Schuler maintained that his choice to keep this information private was a matter of civil liberty. He later served as the government caucus chair under Stefanson.
His decision to step back from politics aligns with recent announcements from other Tory MLAs, including Doyle Piwniuk and Kelvin Goertzen, both of whom have also stated they will not seek re-election. The political landscape in Manitoba is evolving, with Premier Wab Kinew hinting at the possibility of an early election, which could further shift the dynamics in the lead-up to 2027.
As Schuler prepares for this new chapter in his life, his contributions to Manitoba’s legislative assembly and the communities he has represented will be remembered by many. His commitment to public service over nearly three decades has left a lasting impact on the province’s political landscape.
