Airlines Face Backlash for Poor Legroom, American and United at the Bottom

A recent study has ranked American Airlines and United Airlines as the worst carriers in the United States for legroom, based on analysis of over one million passenger reviews. Researchers examined experiences from travelers on the twenty largest airlines serving the United Kingdom. The findings indicate that American Airlines received the most complaints regarding space, while United Airlines ranked closely behind.

Among the airlines assessed, British Airways was noted for having the least legroom, which slightly alleviated the criticism directed towards the American carriers. The report revealed that budget airlines often provided better legroom experiences, according to passenger feedback.

Legroom Rankings and Passenger Feedback

The research conducted by OddsMonkey highlighted specific airlines that garnered the highest number of complaints regarding legroom. The findings are as follows:

– British Airways: 52.6%
– Ryanair: 51.4%
– United Airlines: 47.2%
– American Airlines: 43.8%
– Air Canada: 42.1%

While Ryanair was the only low-cost carrier in the top five for legroom complaints, many other budget airlines received fewer negative reviews. Notably, Qatar Airways faced more complaints than several European low-cost carriers, including Wizz Air and Aer Lingus.

One dissatisfied passenger’s review of British Airways encapsulated the frustration experienced by many. They remarked, “British Airways was not only the worst, but it was also false advertising to call it business class. The seats were the same as economy seats with other passengers close in front and behind, and no legroom.”

The Expectations vs. Reality Gap

The disappointment expressed by customers often stems from the price they pay for tickets on full-service airlines compared to budget options. Travelers expect more comfort and space when paying premium prices, leading to frustration when the reality does not meet those expectations.

United Airlines is perceived as offering the most cramped seating among the four largest U.S. carriers. While Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, and American Airlines provide slightly more legroom, the differences are often minimal. United’s newer Airbus A321neo aircraft have more seats than competitors like Delta, which can contribute to reduced space per passenger.

In addition to seat density, upgrades to amenities, such as larger overhead bins and improved in-flight entertainment systems, may have further compressed physical space in cabins.

American Airlines has also faced scrutiny over its cabin configurations. The introduction of the 737 MAX 8 has set a new standard for seat density across its fleet. The airline has removed seatback entertainment from many domestic flights, making cramped conditions even more apparent for passengers.

According to reports, American Airlines’ average seat pitch in economy class is approximately 30 inches. Although this is marginally more than the 28 inches offered by low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier, it falls short when compared to legacy competitors like JetBlue and Southwest, which offer around 32 inches.

To accommodate more passengers, American Airlines has implemented “slimline” seats with thinner padding, which may enhance the feeling of compactness in its aircraft.

As airlines continue to navigate the balance between cost efficiency and customer satisfaction, the feedback from travelers highlights a critical area for improvement in the industry. With legroom complaints on the rise, addressing the expectations of passengers may become essential for airlines aiming to maintain a competitive edge in a challenging market.
