California Farmer Pleads Not Guilty to Estranged Wife’s Murder
A prominent farmer from California, Michael Abatti, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering his estranged wife, Kerri Ann Abatti, during an alleged shooting at her home in Pinetop, Arizona. The incident reportedly occurred on November 20, 2023, and has garnered significant attention given Abatti’s standing in the agricultural community.
During a court appearance on Wednesday at the Navajo County Superior Court, Abatti, aged 63, faced allegations stemming from the fatal shooting that took place in the eastern Arizona mountain town. Following his extradition from El Centro, California, where he was arrested, Abatti was informed of the charges against him. Prosecutors have indicated that he is currently being held in the Navajo County jail with a bond set at $5.5 million. However, his attorney, Owen Roth, stated that Abatti is capable of posting bail.
According to investigators, Abatti traveled approximately 500 miles from El Centro to Pinetop, where he allegedly carried out the shooting before returning to California early the following morning. Kerri Ann Abatti, a descendant of early Latter-day Saints settlers who contributed to the establishment of Pinetop in the 1880s, had filed for divorce from her husband prior to her death. At the time, divorce proceedings were pending in California.
The couple, who married in 1992 and had three children together, had reportedly been involved in disputes regarding financial matters related to their separation. The Abatti family has deep roots in the Imperial Valley, known for its agricultural production, particularly in leafy greens and melons. Michael Abatti’s family has a long history in farming, with his grandfather being an Italian immigrant and his father a founding member of the Imperial Valley Vegetable Growers Association.
As the case unfolds, further details regarding the circumstances of Kerri Ann Abatti’s death and the ongoing legal proceedings will likely emerge, shedding light on the complexities surrounding this high-profile incident. The implications of the case extend beyond personal tragedy, touching upon issues of domestic disputes and community impacts in both California and Arizona.
