Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed global investment banker Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States. Wiseman will officially assume the role on February 15, 2025, with a significant focus on leading negotiations concerning the review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, often referred to as the continental free trade deal.

The announcement was made by Carney’s office, highlighting Wiseman’s extensive background in finance and his close relationship with the Prime Minister. Wiseman is a longtime friend of Carney and was one of the early contributors to Carney’s leadership campaign, donating $1,750 to his bid and an additional $1,750 to the Liberal Party during the election campaign in April 2025.

Transition and Focus on Trade Relations

Wiseman will take over the ambassadorial position from Kirsten Hillman, who recently announced her departure. Hillman stated that a new team would be better suited to tackle the upcoming review of the trade agreement, which is set to be a critical issue in the next year. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement has been a cornerstone of North American trade relations, and Wiseman’s experience is expected to play a pivotal role in navigating this complex landscape.

Wiseman is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations. This council was initially established by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just before the inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Although Wiseman was not originally included in the council under Trudeau, Carney appointed him shortly after taking office in March 2025.

The appointment signifies Carney’s strategic approach to fostering strong diplomatic ties with the United States. Wiseman’s expertise in investment banking and pension fund management could provide valuable insights as Canada seeks to strengthen its economic relations with its southern neighbor.

As the new ambassador, Wiseman will be tasked with not only advancing trade negotiations but also enhancing overall bilateral relations between Canada and the United States. His success in this role will be closely watched as both countries navigate a series of complex issues that have arisen in recent years.

The Canadian public and business leaders will be keen to see how Wiseman’s experience will influence discussions on trade policies and other critical areas of cooperation.
