Coffee Prices Surge Nearly 28% in Canada Amid Global Challenges
Coffee prices in Canada have experienced a significant increase, soaring by nearly 28 percent from 2024 to the previous month, as reported by RBC. This sharp rise stands in stark contrast to the overall food inflation rate of just 4.2 percent year-over-year. The surge in coffee prices reflects a combination of adverse weather conditions and increased global demand.
A detailed analysis by Statistics Canada reveals that the price hike varies by type. Roasted or ground coffee has seen a dramatic increase of 35.2 percent, while instant and other coffee types rose by 19.7 percent. The average household expenditure on coffee has also risen significantly, jumping from $64 in 2010 to $169 today.
According to Remitly, approximately 72 percent of Canadians consume coffee daily, making Canada one of the leading nations in per-capita coffee consumption outside Europe. Most of the world’s coffee is cultivated in the “bean belt” around the equator, with Colombia and Brazil being prominent producers.
Impact of Climate and Production Challenges
Sylvain Charlebois, the senior director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, highlights that the farmgate price, which is the price farmers receive before retail, has surged by 266 percent over the past five years. Charlebois recently visited Brazil and Colombia and noted a significant decline in production due to unfavorable weather conditions, including a lack of sunlight and early frost.
Coffee plants require stable climates, and recent years have seen Brazil and Colombia grappling with intense droughts, rising temperatures, and unpredictable weather patterns. These conditions have compromised yields and created obstacles during harvesting, contributing to tighter global supply chains and consequently higher prices.
Additionally, Charlebois points to a growing demand for coffee in Asia as a significant factor in the price increase. Many middle-class families in Asia have shifted their beverage preferences from tea to coffee. Data from Coffee Intelligence indicates that coffee consumption in Asia has risen by nearly 15 percent since 2018, with China’s coffee consumption increasing by almost 150 percent over the past decade.
Trade Policies and Future Outlook
Trade dynamics also play a role in the rising coffee prices. A trade dispute between the United States and Canada led to the imposition of tariffs on coffee. Although Canada lifted its coffee tariffs in September and the U.S. followed suit in November, the ripple effects of these policies have added to the overall price pressures.
Looking ahead, Charlebois advises that Canadians should not expect coffee prices to decline in the near future. He states, “I think we’re going to be facing some production headwinds for a while,” suggesting that ongoing climate challenges will persist.
As consumers grapple with these price increases, the evolving landscape of coffee production and consumption reflects broader global trends and challenges impacting the industry. The future of coffee pricing remains uncertain, influenced by both environmental factors and shifting consumer preferences.
