Delta Air Lines has garnered attention with its announcement to resume operations on the longest domestic flight within the United States. The route connects Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts to Honolulu International Airport (HNL) in Hawaii, spanning an impressive 5,095 miles (8,200 km). This distance surpasses many transatlantic flights, highlighting the significance of long-haul travel in Delta’s portfolio. However, the airline also relies heavily on short feeder flights, which connect smaller airports to its expansive network through larger hubs.

Exploring Delta’s Shortest Routes

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, the shortest scheduled domestic passenger route operated by Delta in February 2026 measures just 74 miles (119 km). This route connects Capital Region International Airport (LAN) in Lansing, Michigan, to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Passengers benefit from this short corridor by gaining access to Delta’s wider array of domestic and international connections. Delta plans to operate a total of 78 flights in each direction on this segment, with services provided by regional jets from SkyWest Airlines, specifically the Bombardier CRJ series. Flights on this route have a block time of approximately 48 minutes.

Delta’s Detroit hub plays a pivotal role in its operations. The airline states, “The Motor City is home to five Sky Clubs that provide customers with thoughtful amenities like an assortment of meal offerings, premium beverage selections, and intentionally crafted lounge space.”

Another five routes under 100 miles are also part of Delta’s domestic offerings this month. The most frequently serviced is the 95-mile (153 km) route from Detroit to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), which will see 132 rotations—83 operated by SkyWest Airlines and 49 by Endeavor Air. Both carriers utilize rear-engined twinjets from the Bombardier CRJ series for this route.

Following closely is the 98-mile (158 km) flight from Detroit to MBS International Airport, which serves the tri-city area of Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw. Additionally, Delta offers two other routes under 100 miles, both scheduled for 78 flights in each direction. While the majority of Delta’s shortest routes are operated by regional partners under the Delta Connection brand, the airline also features its shortest mainline route, which spans 106 miles (171 km). The Boeing 717-200 is the aircraft of choice for this short domestic flight, accommodating 12 first-class and 98 economy seats. Delta operates up to three flights a day on this corridor.
