An explosion in a restaurant located in the Shahr-e-Naw district of Kabul on October 16, 2023, resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left approximately a dozen others injured. The blast occurred in a Chinese restaurant popular among the local Chinese Muslim community, according to police and an Italian charity that operates a surgical unit in the city.

The explosion was confirmed by Khalid Zadran, spokesperson for the Kabul police command. He mentioned that the restaurant was owned by an Afghan national and a Chinese couple. Among the deceased were one Chinese national and six Afghans. The police reported that the explosion happened near the kitchen area of the restaurant, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.

Emergency medical services were quickly mobilized following the incident. The Italian charity EMERGENCY reported that its surgical center, situated close to the blast site, received a total of 20 patients from the explosion, with seven of them already deceased upon arrival. Dejan Panic, the country director for EMERGENCY in Afghanistan, stated that the injured included four women and a child. He added, “The wounded, some of whom are being assessed for surgery, have suffered lacerations and bruises.”

The Afghan Interior Ministry confirmed the occurrence of fatalities and injuries but did not provide specific numbers. Furthermore, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that two Chinese individuals were seriously injured, and a security guard lost his life in the blast. Footage from local television station Tolo News captured the chaotic aftermath, showing people fleeing the scene as smoke and dust enveloped the area.

As investigations continue, the local community and authorities remain on high alert, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced in maintaining security in the Afghan capital. The incident underscores the precarious situation in Kabul, where violence remains a concern despite recent claims of stability from the ruling Taliban government.
