Hundreds of Thousands Attend Funeral for Slain Bangladeshi Activist
Hundreds of thousands gathered in Dhaka on December 16, 2023, to pay their final respects to prominent Bangladeshi activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted during an attack earlier this month. Hadi’s death has intensified political unrest in Bangladesh as the nation heads toward pivotal elections.
Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore on December 14, following the shooting incident in Dhaka on December 12. His killing has raised serious concerns about security and political stability, prompting police to identify suspects believed to have fled to India. The incident has sparked a diplomatic dispute, with both Bangladesh and India summoning each other’s envoys amid rising tensions.
The atmosphere in Dhaka was charged as mourners, many draped in the national flag, converged outside the Parliament complex for funeral prayers. Hadi’s body was returned on December 15, and the government declared December 16 a national day of mourning. He was a prominent figure associated with the Inqilab Moncho cultural group, and plans were made for him to be buried on the campus of Dhaka University, alongside the nation’s revered poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
As the crowd chanted slogans like “We will be Hadi, we will be fighting decades after decades,” the funeral underscored the deep divisions within Bangladeshi society. Hadi had been an outspoken critic of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile since August 5, 2024, after fleeing the country amid growing political tensions. His intended candidacy as an independent in the upcoming February elections highlighted his commitment to change in a landscape dominated by longstanding political rivalries.
The violence following Hadi’s death saw protesters attacking and setting fire to the offices of two major national newspapers. In response to the unrest, Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, urged the public to remain calm as the nation faces a critical juncture in its political history.
Bangladesh’s political landscape is currently marked by a fierce contest between Hasina’s Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami party, which has historical ties to the nation’s independence war, is seeking to expand its influence in the absence of Hasina’s party.
Hadi’s assassination and the subsequent turmoil illustrate the fragile state of democracy in Bangladesh as the country prepares for elections that could reshape its future. The government has faced challenges in addressing calls for justice and security, emphasizing the need for dialogue and stability as tensions escalate.
