ICC to Decide on Duterte Charges in 60 Days Following Hearing
The International Criminal Court (ICC) will reach a decision regarding former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte within 60 days after concluding the final confirmation of charges hearing on February 27, 2026. The decision, expected by April 28, 2026, follows a session presided over by Judge Iulia Motoc and her colleagues, Judges Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou and María del Socorro Flores Liera, at the court’s location in The Hague, Netherlands.
During the hearing, the judges addressed allegations against Duterte, specifically related to crimes against humanity. They now face three options when issuing their ruling: they can confirm the charges, decline to confirm them, or adjourn the hearing to allow the prosecution to gather additional evidence.
If the ICC confirms the charges, Duterte will officially be referred to as “the accused,” leading to a full trial where the prosecution will present evidence to establish his guilt. This case has significant implications, considering the widespread criticism of Duterte’s administration, particularly concerning his controversial war on drugs, which has resulted in thousands of deaths.
The ICC’s process has garnered international attention, as it highlights issues of accountability and justice on a global scale. The outcome of this ruling will not only impact Duterte but also set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
As the world awaits the court’s decision, the implications for both the Philippines and the international community remain profound. The case underscores the ongoing dialogue about human rights and the responsibilities of leaders in power, a conversation that resonates far beyond the borders of the Philippines.
