Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized for Surgery After Coup Conviction
Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, currently serving a 27-year sentence for attempting to prevent the transition of power, has been temporarily released from prison to undergo surgery in Brasilia. The operation, scheduled for Thursday, follows a medical review that deemed it necessary. According to a source from the clinic, Bolsonaro’s convoy arrived at the DF Star hospital, accompanied by a security detail, ahead of the procedure.
Medical Concerns for Bolsonaro
Bolsonaro, aged 70, has faced significant health challenges since he was stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 presidential campaign. Recently, he received a diagnosis of skin cancer, adding to his medical woes. The upcoming surgery will address an inguinal hernia, a condition characterized by a protrusion in the groin area caused by a tear in the abdominal muscles. This operation follows another surgery he had at the same facility in April.
The release from prison was sanctioned by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees Bolsonaro’s case. This latest development raises questions about the former president’s health and his ongoing legal struggles.
Bolsonaro began his prison sentence in late November 2022 after being convicted for his role in a scheme to obstruct President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office. Despite the legal proceedings, Bolsonaro continues to assert his innocence, claiming he is a victim of political persecution.
Security Measures During Hospital Stay
To ensure Bolsonaro’s safety during his hospitalization, Justice de Moraes has ordered a substantial security presence. Two police officers will guard his hospital room around the clock. Furthermore, to maintain security, mobile phones and computers have been banned from the facility.
Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, is permitted to stay with him throughout the recovery process, while his sons are not allowed to visit. Nevertheless, his eldest son, Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator, announced his intention to run in the October 2026 presidential election, suggesting that his father had chosen him as a successor. Meanwhile, another son, Carlos Bolsonaro, a former city councilman, made an appearance outside the hospital to offer his support, expressing hope that seeing his father would be a “wonderful Christmas present.”
In a recent legislative development, the conservative-majority Parliament passed a law that could potentially reduce Bolsonaro’s imprisonment to just over two years. While President Lula has indicated he intends to veto this law, Parliament retains the authority to override such a decision.
The situation surrounding Bolsonaro remains complex as his health and legal battles intersect. The outcome of his surgery and the political landscape in Brazil will likely evolve as both unfold in the coming weeks.
