New Search for Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 Begins
A renewed search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is now underway, more than a decade after the aircraft’s mysterious disappearance. On March 8, 2014, the Boeing 777 vanished while en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, carrying 249 passengers, most of whom were Chinese nationals. Despite extensive investigations and previous searches, the fate of the flight remains uncertain, with only small pieces of debris found along the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands.
The Malaysian government has officially approved this new search effort, which is being led by Texas-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity. The search is scheduled to commence on December 30, following a pause earlier this year due to adverse weather conditions. Ocean Infinity operates under a “no find, no fee” contract with the Malaysian government, meaning the firm stands to earn up to $70 million if significant wreckage is discovered.
Details of the Search Operation
Ocean Infinity’s CEO, Oliver Punkett, has expressed confidence in the company’s improved technology, which he believes will enhance the chances of locating the aircraft. Although it remains unclear if new information about the plane’s location has emerged, Punkett noted that the search area has been narrowed down to a site assessed to have the highest probability of containing the wreckage. The precise coordinates have not been disclosed, but the search will cover a vast area of 15,000 square kilometres in the southern Indian Ocean.
The operation is expected to last for 55 days, during which a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles will be deployed. These vehicles will map the ocean floor to depths of up to 6,000 metres, conducting a thorough examination of the area.
The Disappearance and Previous Searches
The last communication from Flight MH370 occurred approximately 40 minutes after takeoff. Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah’s final words were “Good night, Malaysian three seven zero,” as the plane entered Vietnamese airspace and subsequently disappeared from radar. Following this, military radar tracked the aircraft as it deviated from its flight path, ultimately losing contact over the Andaman Sea.
Since the plane’s disappearance, multiple searches have been conducted, primarily involving teams from Malaysia, Australia, and China. The initial underwater search covered an area of 120,000 square kilometres, based on satellite data suggesting the aircraft had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. Despite an expenditure of around $183 million CAD, this search was suspended in January 2017 without any substantial findings. To date, only three wing fragments have been confirmed as part of Flight MH370, despite approximately 30 pieces of suspected debris being collected.
A report released in 2018 suggested that the plane’s controls were likely manipulated to divert it from its intended route, although investigators have not determined who was responsible. The report cleared passengers and crew from any wrongdoing but highlighted errors made by air traffic control in Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City.
Theories surrounding the incident range from hijacking to mechanical failure, yet no definitive conclusions have been drawn. The absence of a distress signal or any demands raises further questions about what may have occurred on that fateful night.
As the new search begins, families of the passengers and the global community hold onto hope that this latest effort may finally bring closure to one of aviation’s most enduring mysteries.
