No Charges Filed in Fatal Crash that Claimed Five Lives in Ontario

No charges will be filed in connection with a tragic three-vehicle collision that took place northeast of London, Ontario, on May 23, 2025. The incident resulted in the deaths of four teenage student-athletes and their teacher, Mathew Eckert, during their return from a softball tournament.

The crash occurred around 16:30 at the intersection of Thorndale Road and Cobble Hills Road. According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the deceased included two 17-year-old girls, Danica Baker and Kaydance Ford, along with a 16-year-old girl, Olivia Rourke. Mathew Eckert, a 33-year-old teacher at Walkerton District Community School, was also among the victims. He coached the girls’ softball team and was driving them home from the event in Dorchester.

Initial reports indicated that the five individuals were all occupants of the same SUV, which first collided with a transport truck. The impact caused the truck to crash into a second SUV. Tragically, Eckert and the teenage girls died at the scene, while a 16-year-old girl, Rowan McLeod, was flown to hospital by helicopter but succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

Investigation Concludes Without Charges

Nearly seven months after the crash, the OPP announced that no charges would be laid. In a statement shared via social media, OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk indicated that a thorough review of all evidence and circumstances led to this determination. He noted, “No further information will be released in relation to this incident, out of respect for the families involved.”

The deaths of the five residents from Walkerton, a small town located about two hours north of London, have deeply affected the community. Hundreds of residents expressed their grief on social media, sharing photographs of running shoes displayed on front porches in memory of the victims.

A candlelight vigil held at Walkerton District Community School attracted hundreds of attendees, underscoring the profound impact of the tragedy on the local population. Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his condolences through social media, stating, “This is an unimaginable loss – one that no family, no classmate, no school should ever have to endure. Canadians are holding the Walkerton community in our hearts.”

The OPP’s decision not to proceed with charges has been met with mixed reactions from the community, as residents continue to grapple with the loss of their young athletes and beloved teacher.
