Norwegian Ambassador Resigns Amid Epstein Scrutiny
A prominent Norwegian diplomat, Mona Juul, has resigned from her role as the country’s ambassador to Jordan following scrutiny regarding her connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The resignation, announced by Norway’s Foreign Ministry on October 15, 2023, comes just days after Juul was suspended from her position amid revelations that Epstein had bequeathed $10 million to the children of both Juul and her husband, Terje Rød-Larsen, in a will created shortly before his death in a New York prison in 2019.
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described Juul’s decision to resign as “correct and necessary.” He stated that her association with Epstein indicated a “serious lapse in judgment” and expressed concerns about the potential erosion of trust required in her diplomatic role. Eide confirmed that an investigation into Juul’s knowledge of and interactions with Epstein would proceed, emphasizing the need for transparency.
Juul has publicly acknowledged that her previous assertion of minimal contact with Epstein was “imprecise.” In a statement to the Norwegian news agency NTB, she clarified that her interactions stemmed primarily from her husband’s relationship with Epstein, asserting that she did not have an independent social or professional connection with him. She admitted that her contact with Epstein had been sporadic and private, not part of her official duties, but recognized the necessity for greater caution in such matters.
Broader Implications and Investigations
The fallout from this situation extends beyond Juul, affecting several notable figures in Norway. Recently, Crown Princess Mette-Marit publicly apologized to “all of you whom I have disappointed” after documents surfaced detailing her own relationship with Epstein. Additionally, the country’s economic crimes unit has launched a corruption investigation into former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland, who previously chaired the committee responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize. Jagland’s lawyer confirmed that he would cooperate with the investigation.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry is also conducting a review of its funding and connections with the International Peace Institute, a think tank based in New York that was led by Rød-Larsen during the period in question. Eide noted that Rød-Larsen had also displayed poor judgment regarding Epstein.
Juul and Rød-Larsen were key figures in the facilitation of the landmark Oslo Accords in the 1990s, which aimed to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The current scrutiny surrounding their connections to Epstein raises significant questions about the integrity of those involved in international diplomacy.
As investigations continue, the implications of these revelations on Norway’s diplomatic relations and public trust remain to be seen. The Foreign Ministry’s commitment to clarifying the matter reflects a broader need for accountability among public officials, especially in light of their associations with individuals like Epstein, whose actions have drawn widespread condemnation.
