Ottawa Police Seize Over 26,000 Illegal Cigarettes in ByWard Market

Ottawa police have confiscated more than 26,000 illegal cigarettes in the ByWard Market area on March 2, 2024, during a proactive enforcement operation. Officers from the Central Division’s Market Neighbourhood Resource Team discovered individuals openly selling cigarettes while stationed in camping chairs on the streets.
At approximately 13:07, police observed the activity near the intersection of George Street and Dalhousie Street. The officers identified all parties involved in the operation. A total of 114 cartons and 197 packs of cigarettes were seized, amounting to 26,740 cigarettes in total.
The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry of Finance’s Tax Compliance and Benefits Division has been notified. This division will conduct a follow-up investigation regarding the illegal sale of tobacco products.
The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to combat illegal tobacco sales in Ottawa. Such operations are crucial for maintaining compliance with tax regulations and ensuring public health safety. The Ottawa Police Service continues to encourage community members to report any suspicious activities related to illegal sales in their neighborhoods.
