Rights Group Confirms Death Toll from Iran Protests Approaches 6,000

A US-based rights group has reported that the death toll from protests in Iran has reached **5,848**, with concerns that the actual number may be significantly higher. The protests, which began in late **December 2022** over economic issues, escalated into widespread demonstrations against the Islamic Republic, particularly following large rallies that started on **January 8, 2023**.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) indicated that out of the confirmed fatalities, **5,520** were protesters, along with **77 minors**, **209** members of the security forces, and **42** bystanders. HRANA is currently investigating an additional **17,091** potential fatalities, highlighting the challenge of accurate reporting amid an ongoing internet shutdown that has lasted for **18 days**. This blackout has severely hindered the ability of NGOs to monitor the situation effectively, with many fearing that confirmed figures reflect only a fraction of the actual toll.

According to monitoring group Netblocks, the internet shutdown continues to obscure the extent of the crackdown on civilians. They noted that “gaps in the filternet are being tightened to limit circumvention while whitelisted regime accounts promote the Islamic Republic’s narrative.”

In a contrasting account, Iranian authorities recently reported a death toll of **3,117**, which they categorized into “martyrs,” including members of security forces and innocent bystanders, and “rioters,” who they claim are backed by foreign powers. Of their reported fatalities, **2,427** were classified as “martyrs.”

Meanwhile, the Persian-language channel Iran International, operating outside Iran, claimed that **more than 36,500** Iranians were killed by security forces during the peak of the protests on January 8 and 9. This figure has not been independently verified and reflects the chaotic and dangerous environment within the country.

The Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) organization has documented at least **3,428** killings of protesters by security forces. They have warned that the final death toll could rise to as high as **25,000** if the current situation continues unchecked.

The ongoing protests and the government’s severe response have drawn international attention, with human rights organizations emphasizing the urgent need for transparency and accountability. The situation in Iran illustrates a critical human rights crisis, with thousands of lives lost and many more at risk.
