SkyWest Airlines to Establish New Maintenance Base in Kansas by 2026
SkyWest Airlines has announced plans to open a new maintenance base at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas, set to commence operations in early spring 2026. This facility will be the airline’s 14th maintenance base and is expected to enhance its existing customer service capabilities at the airport.
The decision to locate the new maintenance base in Salina reflects SkyWest’s ongoing commitment to expanding its operational footprint. The airline, recognized as the world’s largest regional carrier, operates a fleet of over 500 aircraft, including the Bombardier CRJ series and the Embraer E175. These aircraft predominantly serve major airlines such as Delta Connection, American Eagle, and United Express.
Details of the New Maintenance Base
Salina Regional Airport currently facilitates flights exclusively operated by United Express, connecting to cities like Chicago, Denver, and Houston. The new maintenance facility will likely focus on servicing the Bombardier CRJ aircraft utilized by these routes. Although Salina is a smaller outstation, the maintenance base is strategically positioned to serve as a critical component of SkyWest’s operational network.
This development is anticipated to create several high-paying jobs in the local area, complementing the existing customer service positions associated with the airport’s operations. SkyWest has garnered significant support from local and state authorities, including the Kansas Department of Commerce, the City of Salina, and the Salina Airport Authority.
Operational Responsibilities and Impact
The new maintenance facility will play a vital role in conducting comprehensive inspections and repairs. Unlike line stations, which perform light maintenance to ensure aircraft readiness, a full maintenance base is responsible for more extensive repairs. This includes regular checks, structural repairs, and overhauls, which may require aircraft to be taken out of service for extended periods.
SkyWest currently operates 13 maintenance bases and an equal number of line stations across its network. While line stations enable quick repairs, the maintenance base in Salina will handle more significant tasks that ensure the safety and reliability of the fleet.
As the largest regional airline in the United States and globally, SkyWest Airlines operates a diverse range of aircraft types, including the Bombardier CRJ-200, CRJ-550, CRJ-700, CRJ-900, and the Embraer E175. Its operations are primarily focused in the western United States, where it partners with major airlines through the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, providing vital connectivity to smaller communities.
The establishment of this new maintenance base not only signifies growth for SkyWest Airlines but also represents a positive economic impact for the Salina region, reinforcing the airline’s role in supporting both local employment and the broader aviation industry.
