Spain’s Unemployment Rate Falls Below 10% for First Time Since 2008

Spain has reached a significant milestone as its unemployment rate dropped below 10 percent for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. According to the National Statistics Institute, the jobless rate stood at 9.93 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, reflecting a decrease of 0.52 percentage points from the previous quarter. Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez celebrated this achievement, announcing on social media that “Spain has almost 22.5 million people with jobs, a new record.” The decline in unemployment has been largely attributed to growth in the service sector, particularly the crucial tourism industry, which contributes about 13 percent of the country’s annual economic output.
